Mailbag: Post Prostate Surgery

Question:

I had prostate removal Feb1st. I'm doing my Kegel exercises everyday, and have a trickle every now and then, using a pad twice a day. But I experience at nite sometimes whereas I cannot control my bladder and have leakage. I continue to use a pad at night to avoid wetting the bed. Is this going to continue or is there any medication to solve this?

Answered by Dr. Randy Fagin:

Dr. Randy FaginAfter prostate cancer surgery patients can experience sudden urges to urinate that often result in leakage. After this surgery the bladder's storage capacity can be reduced and the urge to urinate can come more frequently.

Fortunately, this is usually mild and gets better for the majority of patients on its own. However, for patients who experience a higher level of these symptoms medications like Enablex, Toviaz, and Vesicare can be a big help.
