With more patients choosing daVinci prostate surgery than any other treatment for prostate cancer, Robotic Prostate Surgery has become the latest in cutting edge treatment for prostate cancer. The operation entails removal of the prostate and seminal vesicles while selectively preserving the muscles and nerves that are responsible for urinary control and erectile function. The cancer removal rates, urinary control rates, and post-operative erectile function are equal to, and in some surgeon’s hands, better than reported outcomes for traditional open surgery. In addition, blood loss, need for blood transfusion, hospital stay, and return to full activity are all lessened when compared to open surgery.

ADVANTAGES OF DA VINCI ROBOTIC PROSTATECTOMY

Dr. Fagin & Dr. Giesler

  • negative margin rates with da Vinci surgery are equal to, and in some reports better than, that of traditional open surgery.
  • there is less blood loss when compared to traditional open surgery and rarely need for blood transfusion
  • patients experience less pain after daVinci surgery (many patients do not require any pain medication)
  • hospital stay is typically only 23 hours
  • patients are back to daily activities in a matter of days
  • urinary control can begins to return as soon as a week after surgery
  • patients an excellent opportunity to return to full erections in the hands of surgeons experienced in nerves sparing

Dr. Giesler has witnessed the evolution of the robotic surgery from its inception to its current state of the art technique. The first cases took 6-8 hrs to complete. Today, with improved techniques, the average time for surgery is less than 3 hrs.  During his training, Dr. Giesler participated in over 100 robotic prostatectomies. As an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Giesler taught laparoscpic and robotic surgery to urology residents and fellows.  Most recently, Dr. Giesler has further honed his skills by working closely with Dr. Randy Fagin. To date, he has performed over 200 robotic surgeries. In 2010, Dr. Giesler again expanded surgical options for prostate cancer patients to include HIFU.
